The Courtyard Collective at Carlton

Type
Academic / Contextual Residential
Location
Carlton, Melbourne
Year
2023
Role
Individual Academic Project

Located at 2 Macarthur Square in Carlton, this residential project explores ways to strengthen neighbourhood connections within an established urban fabric.

The design is organized around a central courtyard that forms the social heart of the site, mediating between two dwellings and extending the shared character of Macarthur Square.

The courtyard establishes a threshold between public and private life: one edge provides privacy and domestic retreat, while the other opens toward Canning Street and the public realm.

A rainwater garden at the centre promotes ecological awareness through shared maintenance, while bicycle parking along Nicholls Lane activates the laneway and encourages informal encounters between neighbours.

Together, these spatial and programmatic gestures cultivate a modest yet engaged housing model that brings people closer to one another and to their environment.
