Community Library: The Social Infrastructure

A contemporary public library is conceived here as a form of social infrastructure — a place that connects people from their homes, workplaces, and the streets, fostering collective engagement with the city.

The design is organized as two primary volumes. One faces the city with transparent glass façades that support public gathering, while the other faces the Yarra River and is defined by concrete walls and large apertures that frame views toward the water.

Between the two volumes, an outdoor gallery creates a threshold between civic and natural realms. Concrete and reflective steel panels reinforce this transition and establish a distinct spatial identity between the city and the river.

A series of ascending platforms integrates seating and shelving, culminating in an elevated outlook toward Melbourne's skyline. Bookshelves operate not only as furniture, but also as walls, gates, seating, and spatial devices that connect the two volumes and the gallery into a continuous public landscape.
